Major Health Problems for Seniors – Take Action!

According to the CDC (2021), these are the most common health issues for seniors:

  • Heart Disease/Stroke – More seniors die from these than all cancers combined. Women are at higher risk twice as many women die of heart disease than men. Learn your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. *
  • Cancer & Respiratory Disease – Lung cancer is the most common.  Followed by COPD (bronchitis, emphysema) —STOP SMOKING! *
  • Diabetes – 96% of diabetics have Type 2, often managed by weight loss, exercise, and a healthy diet. *
  • Injuries/Falls – According to both the Mayo Clinic and CDC falls and injuries are the fourth highest cause of death. Always keep a copy of living will in glove compartment for safety. * If you call 911 and they suggest going to a hospital, GO. Death occur from closed head injuries.
    • Check if medications cause dizziness. *
    • If you’ve fallen before, note when, where, and how—TELL your doctor. *
    • Stay active—walk, swim, or try tai chi to improve balance and coordination. *
    • Remove home hazards like throw rugs and poor lighting. *
    • Install grab bars before you need them. *
  • Alzheimer’s/Dementia – 1 in 3 over 70 and 2 in 3 over 80 show signs. Keep your brain active—do crosswords, Sudoku, or use your non-dominant hand for tasks. *
  • Arthritis – Osteoarthritis can be managed by increasing calcium intake (tofu, leafy greens, yogurt) and avoiding high-phosphorus foods (red meat, soda). Weight-bearing exercises help bone density. *
    • Rheumatoid arthritis requires early, aggressive treatment—consult a Rheumatologist.  *
