INFLAMMATION: DON’T FEAR IT—WORK WITH YOUR BODY

You may have heard that inflammation is the enemy and that we should do everything possible to “get rid of it.” The truth is much more interesting—and reassuring.

Inflammation is one of your body’s protection systems. When you get a cut, fight an infection, or injure a muscle, inflammation helps your immune system respond and begin the healing process. Without it, your body could not protect or repair itself.

The concern is long-lasting, low-grade inflammation,  because it appears to be connected with many conditions associated with aging and chronic illnesses.

The good news? You have more influence over the things that affect your health than you may realize.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

🚶 MOVE EVERY DAY
Walking, stretching, strength training, gardening, dancing—movement helps your body function better. You don’t need to exercise perfectly. JUST MOVE!

🥦 FEED YOUR BODY WELL
Build meals around vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, fish, and other nutritious foods, including 60-70 grams of protein daily. Eliminate all processed foods and read the labels to find added sugar and salt.

😴 PRIORITIZE SLEEP
Your body does important repair work while you sleep. Aim for a regular sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine. Read Optimizing Sleep on HealthShare: scclhs.com

🧘 MANAGE STRESS
Chronic stress will affect the entire body. Try walking, deep breathing, meditation, relaxing music, time outdoors, or simply connecting with people you enjoy.

💧 STAY HYDRATED
Water supports nearly every system in your body. Drink regularly throughout the day: 1 ounce of water per ½ your body weight daily. TOO LATE WHEN YOU FEEL THIRSTY!

❤️ DON’T CHASE “ANTI-INFLAMMATORY” CURES
Be cautious of products, supplements, extreme fasting, or internet trends promising to “eliminate inflammation.” Inflammation is complicated—and not something you need to completely shut off.
