FALL-PREVENTION TO-DO LIST

FALL-PREVENTION TO-DO LIST

Small Changes Today Can Protect Your Independence Tomorrow

Falls are not simply a “getting older” problem. They can happen to active, independent people—and the consequences can be serious. The good news? Many falls can be prevented.

If you live alone, this checklist is especially important. Take 20 minutes this week and walk through your home with fresh eyes.

🏠 YOUR HOME SAFETY CHECK

☐ Bathroom: Install securely anchored grab bars in the shower/tub and toilet areas.
☐ Shower: Use a non-slip mat. Consider a shower chair and handheld showerhead.
☐ Nighttime: Add nightlights from your bedroom to the bathroom.
☐ Rugs: Remove loose rugs or secure them firmly throughout the house.
☐ Stairs: Keep stairs completely clear. Check that handrails are secure and lighting is good.
☐ Walkways: Make sure cords, clutter, and furniture are out of walking paths.
☐ Bedroom: Keep the path from your bed to the bathroom clear and well lit.
☐ Shoes: Avoid loose backless slippers and slippery leather footwear.  Choose supportive, non-slip footwear. Slip-on preferred.
☐ Ladders: DO NOT CLIMB LADDERS OR STEP STOOLS. Ask someone to help or find an alternate solution.
☐ Medications: Ask your PHARMACIST (as you are getting multiple MDs) to review your medications for possible effects on balance, alertness, or blood pressure, contraindications, and correct timing.
☐ Vision: Keep your annual eye examination on your calendar.
☐ Strength & Balance: Keep moving. Include strength and balance activities in your weekly routine. JUST DO IT!
