DON’T EVER’S

DON’T EVER’S

Understand the top 5 Important Warning Signs. If something feels “off,” don’t wait. Early action leads to better outcomes. Being your own healthcare advocate means paying attention to changes in your body and acting early. These five symptoms should never be ignored:

1. Slurred Speech

Slurred or garbled speech can be a sign of a stroke. In the U.S., someone has a stroke about every 40 seconds.
Call 911 immediately.
DO NOT Drive yourself or a loved one to the hospital. Emergency responders will begin treatment right away, which can save brain function and life.

2. Changes in Moles or Skin Spots

See a dermatologist if you notice:

  • Asymmetry (one side looks different)
  • Changes in color
  • Change in size or shape
  • Any new or evolving  skin changes

Early skin checks can prevent serious problems. Schedule at least annually.

3. Extreme Fatigue

There is a difference between feeling tired and extreme fatigue.
Extreme fatigue means feeling completely worn out after simple activities such as, dressing, walking short distances, or making a meal. This deserves medical attention. Dress like you feel when going to MD/PC. Sweat pants, bad breath, and dirty hair say a lot to your healthcare professional

4. Constant Thirst Is the brain’s natural signal that your body needs more fluid. While occasional thirst is normal, ongoing or excessive thirst is not. If you feel thirsty even after drinking enough water (1 oz per  ½ your weight per day), could be a warning sign of diabetes. When blood sugar levels are too high, the body attempts to eliminate excess sugar through urination. This forces the kidneys to work overtime, leading to frequent urination and increased thirst. If you experience constant thirst, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider and have your blood sugar level checked promptly.

5. Swollen Feet or Ankles

Swelling in the feet or ankles, known as pedal edema, occurs when fluid builds up in the lower legs. This can happen when the heart is not pumping blood as efficiently as it should. When circulation slows, fluid can leak from blood vessels and collect in the tissues. Persistent swelling may be a sign of heart strain, circulation problems, or medication side effects. If swelling is new, worsening, or accompanied by shortness of breath or sudden weight gain, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

Trust Your Body. Speak Up Early.

If something feels “off,” don’t wait. Early action leads to better outcomes. You are YOUR  strongest health advocate. ALWAYS remember, go to your MD looking as sick as you feel!
