 Refill Before Giving: Caregiver Strength

Make yourself a priority during this holiday season. Your well-being is not optional — it is a vital part of your care plan. A strong caregiver is rested, supported, and healthy. Taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do for both of you.

Schedule real breaks: Block time on your calendar for rest, even short 10–15 minute resets. Ask family, friends, or respite services to take over when you need relief — and accept the help.
Protect your body: Prioritize sleep, eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, and move every single day. Caregiving is physically demanding — you can’t afford to run on empty.
Protect your mind: Stay connected to others. Join a support group, talk with friends, or meet with a counselor. Isolation leads to stress, resentment, and burnout — connection helps you stay grounded.
Know your limits: Notice when you’re exhausted, irritable, or overwhelmed. These are signals, not failures. Step back, reset, and be specific and ask for help before stress turns into a crisis.

✓ Promote Independence
• Let them do what they can safely.
• Use helpful tools and therapies.
• Do with them, not for them.

✓ Communicate with Patience
• Slow down and give time to respond.
• Stay compassionate — delays aren’t confusion.
• Listen for emotional needs, not just physical ones.

✓ Coordinate Care
• Keep a clear schedule for meds and routines.
• Track symptoms and changes.
• Attend appointments and advocate as needed.

Always accept help that is offered.  Be prepared with a response to “I wish I could help.” “Could you bring dinner on Tuesday night?  You can’t care for someone else if you’re running on empty. You can’t pour strength into others when your own tank is drained. Caring for others requires you to stay steady and strong.
